Books read Sept 2015

Nantucket by Nan Rossiter
Have read many of the authors other works and have enjoyed them. Love how the book got it's cover and what it means.
Starts out with Liam who has taken over his uncles boat building business on the island after he passes away. He had raised him after his parents died and he knows the business from all angles.
When he was a teen he met a woman Arcadia and they dated for a bit but she left the island. Coop always warned him she would be trouble as her money and high class status was from the other side of the tracks.
Life goes on for Liam and his dog and cat in the house his uncle refurbished by hand. Love all the talk of what he does in the business using his hands and the terminology of his craft and tools. Love learning new things along the way.
Such  a touching, caring story. He does meet her again He talks to her to find out why she never answered his calls or letters. She's got a bigger secret she's kept from him over the years...and so much more.
It's all so fast and so many struggles to still overcome. Love the characters, how strong they are with one another and others as they enter their lives.
I received this book from The Kennsington Books in exchange for my honest review

A Vintage Year by Kate Preston
Cover fascinated me enough to want to read this book. Love nature and growing things and story line sounded good also. Starts out with two women who are into wine and they want to bid on the case but lose to Harris Tucker, the tennis player. His accountant comes up with a scheme to teach Harris a lesson and he ends up working at the vineyard and a date with Cassie.
Laughed at the idea of spending a week at the farm. Love all the chores and jobs needing to be done, and during what seasons and that he is a city boy and has NO clue.
Harris has a deal that he will lose his wine if he doesn't show up for work. If he does show up Laura will owe him one of her bottles.
Harris helps out a lot at the ranch/farm/vineyard and falls into many scams that really lighten things up when matters are dire. Laura is now divorced and living back home with her two kids. Other family members are around to help her bring the kids to and from school but some days
she allows Harris to pick them up.....He finds he is the charm that will draw the crowds to tour the vineyard and they use him among his other duties. Love how the date turns out-didn't see that coming.
Best part for me was learning more about the grapes, growing them, all terms and the biodynamic parts of farming.
We learn of Laura's past and how she loved Harris, he had been her tennis teacher....she knows what her priorities are....
Others realize how much Harris is worth to their business and the job offers come in, a lot more money than working at the farm...
Love how the siblings work together and keep the secret from their father....conflicts arise from all corners and tempers flare.
It would be a miracle if Laura and Harris could ever have a relationship....
Love how you picture the story going and you are wrong at every turn. So many obstacles, funny at times...twists and turns and an all-around good read.
Best part for me was learning more of the vineyard and its operations. Felt like I was there, with very detailed descriptions. Also that I went on vacation for the festivals and fun nights out.
Handful of characters whose lives are intertwined and they work together...even the townsfolk for a better town. Can’t wait to read more from this author!

The Sea Keeper's Daughter by Lisa Wingate
Whitney and her cousin run 2 restaurants but one is failing and has met with disapproval at every turn. She hopes there is still some hope to get them out of debt and to make a go of both, but in the meantime the second one remains closed.
She then gets notified her step father, Clyde is in the hospital off the coast of NC and she decides to go there to help with his estate and try to get his kids to care for him...
Love the mystique of the sea captains, their ships that have wrecked on the coast and the wild horses...
Love hearing of all the treasures in her parents house, so precious!  Fascinating to learn about the FWP, never knew of it.
Story inside of this other story are the letters from her grandmother's twin sister who she had no idea even existed. Loved hearing of the FWP and the places it took her and her daughter in the hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Facts about the sea turtles and how they are hatched are welcome new to me, information. Like references to Sandy's Seashell Shop and the story keepers saga.
She does have a decision to make about the property and she also has choices. Love how the stories are all connected.
I received this book from Tyndale via Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
Love this author's book and this one is a treasured one. Starts out in France 1940's and the war has come to those who live there.
They are invaded by the Germans and must survive as the hard decisions are made. Book follows two sister and the paths they have each chosen.
I had just read a book by another author based on the war in the same location so will be interesting to read more of life during that time.
Evon remains with Sophia her daughter as her husband leaves to be the soldier he was trained to be. She is a teacher as is her neighbor whose children have grown up together. They live on farms in the country.
Her sister Isabelle lives in the city, high scale school where she's been thrown out of everyone. It's time she leaves school to be on her own. Her father takes her back to live in the city, Paris with her, He runs a bookstore. She is sent to her sisters as the Germans invade the city.
Obstacles keep her from getting directly there and she must survive the hardship of having no one.
What I like about this authors writing is there is usually a few stories in the book, entwined together.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
Watched Longmire where Walt is interviewing candidates for the job position and he asks others about this book and what decision they would've made.
This one is about Lenny and George. Lenny will do anything George says and that gets him in trouble. Lenny liked a red dress a girl wore and he just wanted to touch it. When she yelled he wouldn't let the dress go and that leads them to running away for their lifes.
They walk to a ranch to work and Lenny likes a puppy. George knows if there is a girl involved they will end up having to leave again....the boss has a wife with a roaming eye....
The men hope to run their own farm where they grow the crops in Salinas Valley with a garden and animals and paradise to them.
Lenny doesn't realize how strong he is and many small animals end up dead when he's playing with them. The bosses wife shows up in the barn and she takes Lenny's hand to her hair and he won't let go and she's frightened.
Its up to George to set things right...

Sea Story by Sam Llewellyn
Liked all the adventure and the reaching of the different ports along the journey of the race.
In this book there are really two stories, the one on land and the one on water. And one photographer along the way
and his interpretation of the sailing of the yachts isn't quite how it is for those who actually sailed it. Fascinating to hear of the land part, all the politics
that really make the race or break those sailing it in.

Mind of Her Own by Diana Lesire Brandmeyer
When I started this book I thought wow what a great way to get out of doing the household chores til I realized she was not faking it. Then I got scared that she forget about her life and thought she was someone else and not married, no kids, etc.
She returns to the house where Collin tries to help more around the house and with the kids. He discovers journals from Louisa and starts reading them, not realizing it's her true feelings, about them and life.
He tries to make things better for Jazz by doing things he's never done before with her and the kids-taking time from work and having fun activities with them all. Scents might jog her memory so he gives her many things to smell and sometimes it does remind her of some things in the past.
She brings up things he never knew about and she swears she's a writer but not bookstores carry her books.
They all go to her  family reunion where she recalls one tragic event and it comes to light what happened when she was just a child and it puts one of her children in harm's way and Collin helps to stop it from happening again.
He had also never realized how much church mattered and being part of the community with religious beliefs. Good read, kept me interested and was fun to read about. Other inspirational works by other authors are highlighted at the end of this book.
I received this book from Book Club Network (bookfun.org)  in exchange for my honest review.

FIRST STEPS IN SPANISH: WITHOUT GRAMMAR
Was interested in learning more about the Spanish language as I had taken it in high school for a few years.
Lot of the words I'd not use in an everyday conversation but the book gets you to use proper usage of words in the right tense.
Liked layout of the book and how the lessons are presented. Like especially filling in the missing words from the previous pages that you've studied.
I didn't care for the length of the book. Some words/sentences take up one whole page as you are learning what the words mean.
Liked searching for Spanish words in a puzzle format.  Other works by the author are highlighted at the end.

Children's Books : Sweet as Fruit (Books for kids , ages 4-11 ) (Nutrildren - Nutrition for Children Book 2
Have read some of the author's other works and enjoyed all the new information to a better lifestyle along with a good story for kids to follow along with.
This book is a colorful children's book about the benefits of eating fruit.
Very interesting book but I felt it was more directed to the older kids and adults because of all the technical terms that one can hardly pronounce but with a parent reading along with a child they could easily understand about the fruit and why we must eat it daily.
Super photos and fun facts about all the fruit we can easily get throughout the year in the US and it's link to the states.
Learned so much by reading this and hope the next book will be along the same lines but about vegetables.
Love the idea of having a balanced rainbow source of fruits. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end along with a clickable link for free gifts.
Was alerted to this free kindle book from the author and I have provided this honest review.

Prodigal Son by Danielle Steel
Have enjoyed many works by the author and know this will be another good read.
Starts out with typical life for parents and twin boys. Growing up Michael always wanted to be like his father, the doctor.
He marries Maggie and they have a son and daughter. Bill flees to England and starts researching his mothers symptoms...
She had fallen once and now her husband is in charge of all her medicines and Bill thinks she's being poisoned.
The other son is rather a disappointment to the family and over time he learns about his disability that effects everything he does. He marries and has two boys but with the crash of the stock market he's out of luck and money and houses and cars.
His wife Elena flees to LA to live with her father and the boys and he's offered to help Peter also but he needs to do things on his own.
Amazing tale of the two families over the years and how they are brought together and more disturbing events occur, will it bring them together or draw them further apart from one another.
Love the travel and learning new things.
