Books read Jan 2021

Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey
Wow what a story. Had attended an online podcast where he read a few pages of this book, and podcast was about the new Lincoln car, it's features and charities.
For attending I did receive a free hardbound book of Green Lights. From the very beginning I went from scared to laughing out loud and repeated many times.
Scary when his mother grabbed a knife and was going after the father,  til he squeezed ketchup on her til she gave up.  I found the episodes of various scenes to be very honest, soul searched and down right entertaining.
At times I felt like I was on Saturday Night Live for a skit. Love the author narrating his own story, he emotions come through as he raises his voice in preaches and bumper sticker warning phrases.
The speed of his voice really entrapped my attention also as I come from the northeast and we talk wicked fast.
There is so much to this story and I love how he calls his mom at times and she doesn't go along with what he's telling her but then a few minutes later she calls and asks for a redo of their last conversation.
Love the relationships he has and learned so much about his life in general. Have watched him in a few movies and can't wait to catch the others.
Best first book of the year for me, will be one of my top picks.
Some of the sentences are about 4 lines long, reminding me of 'Alice's restaurant' song with all the lyrics and very long lines, LOL
So many connections, especially the movie in Newport, RI as I was there for court one day while they taped in the immediate area.
So honest and open.

The Children's Blizzard by Melanie Benjamin
Story is about how different teachers in different areas of the west during the 1880's handle the winter months teaching kids.
The agents are paid money as they have made accommodations for people from the east to travel to the west, get free land and make a good living, off the land.
They were NOT told the truth. So many immigrants from the Eastern countries of England.
A rare warm day for January, nobody had brought or worn winter clothes. All of  a sudden the storm came upon them, dropping the temperature, then the winds started, blowing out windows.
Firewood was low and some had to leave to find shelter.
They have lived through fires that they had played together as a game was being played, stepping on the fires and beating them with their hands to put them out.
Such tragedies are told and I can picture the disasters in my mind.
Very emotional story as the teachers were also harmed by the experiences.
Love how this book came about, know author has done her research and created a great storyline to go along with real events.
Received this review copy from Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine via from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

The Tinkerer's Daughter by Jamie Sedgwick
Story starts with Breeze is she is walking us through her life at the age of four or so. She explains how her mother was from an elf group and her father was human. She has parts from both and that gives her special powers.
She is left at the tinker's house as her father has been called to fight in the war.  It's amazing how the man takes care of her as she discovers all kinds of cool things at his foundry and barns. She loves walking among the trees as they talk to her.
Love when she is given small pieces of wood for him to burn. They also warn her of danger. As she gets older she wants to attend school and he helps her with help from the school teacher who is also owner of mercantile in town.
She tinkers right along with him and learns all he can teach her. They are able to build phenomenal things: planes, steam wagons, etc.
I usually can not stand to read about elves and wood creatures but this one captured me attention throughout as she was helping others just like her father did.
Love older years as she helped so many and she learns of her mothers side of the family also. Things don't go according to plans and her life is in danger but she has much help.
Can't wait to read more about her as the saga continues in the next story. Excerpt is included at the end.

The Christmas Star by Diane Darcy
Wish upon a Christmas star and you wish may come true.
Story starts out with Marilyn and she's at her family farm taking care of the animals when she glances up at the Christmas Star and makes a wish.
Story follows her daughter Elise who has left the farm and headed to Chicago and her boyfriend didn't follow her but she still hopes for a while....
Her business life keeps her busy and she does so well on a project that her boss wants her to attend a seminar and take notes.
It's given by Gabriel and it's about forgiving and all things to do with that. He makes them write a letter to someone that they've been wanting to forgive and she writes to her father.
She goes to look for her letter from the box and it's gone. It arrives at the farm and her father opens it and reads it and calls her telling her he's the one that is story.
Reason why she just left when the parents got into a fight about her and Jason but she is willing to head home for the holidays. She enjoys time with her parents and finds Jason hanging around a lot and they get into conversations about why she left.
They do spend some time with one another doing fun things, dinner, sled rides, etc.
She ends up leaving to go back to work and he follows her and tells her in the middle of a work party that he's not leaving til she agrees to marry him.
Predictable book when you learn about the instructor Gabriel. Lot of people have their hands into the matchmaking.
cute Christmas story.

The Mystery of Vomo Island by Anston Hawking
Book starts out with notes from the author and a premise and dedication page.
This story starts out where the last left off but can be read as a stand alone as you are brought up to date on past events.
After they saved the USA from evil Mrs. Brown think the children should take a vacation to Vomo Island.
I had to look this up and all i can say is just WOW. It has everything your heart and mind would desire of a vacation.
They kids are excited and invite Tyler to go as he was part of the quad that solved mysteries. There is so much to this story as we also hear of the bad guys and what they are doing at the same time as what and where the kids are on their journey.
Lots of action and adventure and I loved learning about how to do things on a boat Love step by step instructions so I can maybe do them myself one day.
Some scary parts but the kids are brave. Can they find the loot that others have stolen?
Excerpts from the authors other works are included at the end.
Authors note is enclosed also.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

The Mystery Quad Book 1: the Mystery of the Black Birds by Anston Hawking
This middle grade book interested me and kept my attention throughout.
Starts out when the kids are being dropped off at Tyler's party but something goes wrong....
They are kidnapped as they saw the loot being stolen, put on a plane and find their friend Tyler til they understand he's not one of their friends at all.
They reason with him because Tyler also realizes his father is acting weird and he wants nothing to do with him.
The kids then combine forces to fight the enemy and outwit others to gain entrance to places they need to investigate.
Love the card that allows them to do that and so much more. Lots of battles and can't believe the girl is the one who flies the planes because she knows how to do so via video games she plays on her computer.
So cool!  There are a lot of politics that come into play also. Always another angle to this story.
Can't wait to read more from this author.
Received a review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

True Love for the Reluctant Earl by Eleanor Keating
Story is about Madeline and her parents want her to marry but she's more into reading and learning new things.
Story also follows Edward and he's back home as his father has passed away. He learns of new stipulations to the will and proceeds to find a woman he'd even want to marry.
His sister gets him to go to the masquerade party and he meets up with a woman sitting outside staring up at the stars and they start conversing.
When they meet again she knows it's him, Edward right away because of the color of his eyes.
He is so happy to converse with her rather then the giggly girls at the galas.
The secrets he hides from everyone she hears about and it  upsets her. He tends to his responsibilities while he learns of her proposal to marriage.
When he attends a friends wedding he learns of her intended spouse and has some firepower to use to rescue her from his grasp.
Love the relationships in this story and how others come together for the good of the younger ones.
Has an epilogue and an extended one years later... Excerpt from the next story is attached.
Love the importance of books in this story. what a treasure it was to hear about it numerous times.
Can't wait to read more from this author.
Received this review copy from the publicist and this is my honest opinion.

Love is the Answer God is the Cure – Aimee Nikolov
Book starts out with dedication  page and table of contents.  About the cover is included.
Note about the story and how it all started.
Prologue with prayers. Love that the sisters get to spend time in Dominican Republic because the sister that got married wasn't able to use the trip.
Each chapter also starts with a verse or psalm scripture.
They both meet men they want to get to know better.
Story goes back in time to when Aimee was only 7 and the abuse starts. Hard for me
So much pain, torture, suffering but there are good times also.
Like that Aimee stays in touch with newspapers so she can notify others of what the animal did to her and her family.
Like how religion plays a huge part in this story. Always reliable.
Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

Body in the Woods by Behcet Kaya
Story starts out with Jack and he's on his way to help out Vance on the west coast. Once he arrives he is given a room and they are able to speak about the problem.
The inventor of the invisible plane plans have been stolen and or sold to the  enemy. Heins is dead but Jack follows up on all the leads he has and those that he gets by talking to others.
He's ends up back in NO, LA where his father has passed away and then he heads to England to the plane trade show where he meets with others who do have invisible planes-invisible from radar.
Love the authors works as I have read a few and can't wait to read more. So much goes into these stories and they are easy to follow along but astonishing and shocking at times, the things he uncovers.
Love how this one ended as if it's not quite completed finished...
So much to this story, romance, travel, mystery, technology and family situations. All around great read for anybody.
Adult situations.
Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

A Chocolate-Box Irish Wedding by Josie Riviera

Book starts out with praise and reviews. Info about author's newsletter.
Story starts out with Colum O'Brien and he's on his way to his father's wedding. He will be in the wedding party and he wonders if the girl next door will be there also.
The story also follows Keira (kiki) and she's her mothers choice at the wedding. They are able to reminisce about the days they were dating one another, getting to really know one another.
Love hearing of her sewing abilities and how they each followed their dreams-he to be on stage in plays, her on the runway and even a designer.
Like hearing what they do now 30 years later and how things were left when they fell apart.
You wonder if they will get back together. Like Irish theme in this one and have heard the Irish blessing many times. So touching.
Love that this book is about 50er's characters.
Recipes included at the end.  Note from the author is included.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Slave to the Dream: Everyone's Dream by Gaylan D Wright

Book starts out with quotes from various famous people. Story starts when author became a civilian, 36 later.

Many recollections of his time on the road, coming up on head on collisions on the main highways and nothing left of the people involved.

Mostly drunk driver accidents. Because of the way he was trained he was strong in getting the jobs done along with paperwork. Just when you think you've heard it all he tells of other accidents.

Like the camaraderie he and other troopers had over the years. Hated to hear some bosses did not fight for them or pay increases.

I recall my father also going through state police training but he stayed on the local level. So informative to me and another part of my father's life I didn't know much about.

Pictures throughout the book and love that he brought up his kids like his dad brought up him.

Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

Happiness Power – Robert Gill Jr
Starts with dedication and table of contents where power and physical health, mental health, gratitude self kindness, purpose family friends and community, giving, surprise ending are all discussed in further detail.
I always felt we are the only ones who can make us happy. sure others can help but it's our job. Love this book for pointing out so many things i do on a daily basis, especially charity work and donating to others less fortunate.
Like how one thing can improve your health but I had never associated the things together.
Starts with dedication realized it, put in the way the author explains.
So many examples of how to do things, make changes for the better and just plain motivate you to get it all done.
Appendix contains words of encouragement to help you.
Lots of tips and solutions and summary of the chapter is included. So much information.
Bibliography is also enclosed. About the author is attached also.
Other things that you will get along with Happiness secrets which you can click on the link in the book.
Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

Back to You by Steve Bates
This story starts out with Eddie and he's hiding out in a food truck, no good food for him though. We learn he's in an AI equipped car and she warns him not to go outside.
There's a war out there from his vantage point. The vehicle is not his but he persuades the AI to turn the car into a 1974 pinto, I had one similar and nobody would ever steal it.
He's late for work and tells his boss of a new story line. He takes him for a ride in the vehicle and they select a time frame. The car travels in time, forward and backward.
There are others that join Eddie and they tape stories of inventions and other events.
It's really educational then they bring characters in from Friends and other music stars. Gets way out of hand and comical at times.
Chris was the food truck operator and he does get back to the vehicle and now there are duplicates of characters. At some point some get left behind with hopes of them returning to get them.
Kim K and so many others make appearances. Ending is kind of open so another book in teh series could be easily added.
Lots of high tech, scientific, physics, space and so many other beyond this world things keep you busy keep them all straight.
Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

Making Hearts by Jack Getze
This story starts out with a couple and their teen kids having a holiday party with others at their house.
Teen girl starts having stomach pains and is rushed to the hospital where it's determined she is giving birth.
The parents Papi and Mama and their kids Emily and Philip and the new granddaughter Noel.
Emily is overweight and had weird cycles but didn't really know she was pregnant but she had unprotected sex.
She would rather go to dances and smoke pot then tend to the baby.
Story is from the granddaughter's point of view. Never thought of how they were feeling at dismal times.
When the frailly, 3 out of the 4 test positive for pot the agency steps in to have the child removed. Mama slips and breaks her arm and wants to raise Noel by herself if need be.
Court hearings and words adults have used in front of the granddaughter has brought tears to my eyes.
Circumstances take a deadly turn....
On top of that a girl at school is trying to get Emily in more trouble than ever.... Last hope could be with the boyfriend.
Hope they can 'wake' up and get on with coming together as a family. A new baby should be a joy to all.
Real life situations and so downQ to earth, daily things that happen...
Reason I like this story is because there are many different ages of people and we get to hear from all of them, from their perspectives.
Have personally gone through most of the above myself and had a good outcome.
About the author ends this book along with a listing of other works..
Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

Secret Kisses Love you doc series by Mona Risk
Starts with book description then the story. Praise and awards are noted.
Story starts with Katy at kindergarten and she meets Hoda a new girl
They become friends with Sarah and Julia.
Story follows them through birthday parties also, some are Catholic, Muslim and Jewish.
Plans are made for Hoda to marry a man her parents had picked out for her when she was very young.
He shows up at the graduation party and things don't go as planned. Another is enticed by him....
Like all the different religions and learning about them and how they go about their everyday lifes.
At times things are confusing to me. Love the travel and all the new things for me to learn about.
Amazing who each of the girls has been matched with but is it to be with complications of custom and religion?
Ends with a note from the author and her other work and about the author.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Happy Hollisters Trading Post Mystery #7 by Jerry West
Love that this story follows a family of siblings.
Book starts with a dedication and about the characters and how this series has been rewritten from the original.
Book also contains sketches in black and white of some scenes.
Story surrounds the family and the youngest is getting a burro/donkey. It's around Christmas time and the dad gets an idea to decorate his trading post store and the children help him with ideas.
They go with a Santa, in a sleigh and the reindeer and they put it on the roof. Customers come along and buy gifts and they are put into the big red bag to distribute to the needy kids in the area.
There are also many other things going on with the kids, visitors coming for the holiday, skits at school, donating money by doing things in town to give for the needy, tracking down the stolen items.
Love hearing all the clues and how they all come together. Never thought I'd see this story ending as it did.
Was easy for me to follow the characters and not get sidetracked, first book I've read about this series.
Can't wait to read more of the family's escapades.
Similar to the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew and Paul Moxham's series but each offer just a bit of something different.

Happy Hollisters #1 by Jerry West
Book starts out  with a dedication  page  and who the characters are in real life.
This story starts out with the family and they are moving to Pine Lake, Shoreham.
One problem is the small van with their toys in it and their dads special suitcase of work papers is missing.
There are a lot of clues and love hearing about them all along the way. Such cool time, in 1950's when the boys set up a fish net and it actually catches fish for them the next morning.
Love the pranks they play on one another.
Such scary times also as they get close to the thief. Love hearing of the secret stairway and hidden treasure IN the house.
Can't wait to read more. Such descriptive details.

The Happy Hollisters and the Mystery at Missile Town (Happy Hollisters, #19) by Jerry West
In this adventure the kids are able to visit their relatives in FL. I am familiar with the area but not the space area.
Love how they are able to get to know the people in the area and how they are also able to collect clues about a missing monkey
and a missing nose cone from a rocket that didn't blast off right.
There are many dangers for them along the way but they are able to handle them all, even the neighborhood bully.
Love learning all new things even at their level. Makes such a fun read.

When I Lose My Cool by Michael Gordon
Book starts out with nameplate and the story.
Colorful children's story about anger and how to live with it and get over it.
It's about Deano and he's a dinosaur and he enjoys playing with toys but something goes wrong.
He is mad at himself, everybody and his broken toy. His face gets red and he loses control.
His mother knows what's going on and steps in to help him.
She gives him tips on how to handle the anger and what he needs to do.
This would also work with older kids and adults as well.
Really good suggestions.
Ends with listing of author's other works and about the author.

Book Review: True Love for the Reluctant Earrl by Eleanor Keating
