Books read June 2014

Pressed Pennies by Steven Manchester
I was so hoping when I saw this new title that I'd get a copy to read and review. Without even knowing what the book is about I love the author's other works and knew I'd love this one also.
What really fascinates me is bringing me back to my childhood days and reliving them as they go to a local amusement park-one I've been to often myself in the 60's.
Story starts out with Abby and she's moved back to her hometown after a failed divorce, with her 9yo daughter Paige. Not many in the neighborhood are friendly to reach out to them but Abby shows her daughter how they can change all that.
The book also follows Richard, who had a crush on Abby when they were kids, til he had to move away. He is now a millionaire and owns a lot of material things but is divorced.
Any vacation where the grandkids are present we do run a shiny new penny through the machine to stretch and press it. My daughter was the one to explain to us when she was a teen how it's really done when the local train runs it over on the rails.
Love hearing all about that and the wishes that come with it.  They share many memories of their younger years, allowing me to do the same-down to the cherry Kool-Aid.
Like how they mix the past events with the present ones-water fire. what a different world in the middle of the busy city, a place out of time. I have been to a large majority of the places mentioned in this book, a time for me to relive the calmness of the nature, scenes and just being.
Remembering the past lives, paying it forward and be accountable for yourself...Like how the story follows what Abby is going through from all angles, Rich from his lifestyle, and even Paige and how she is coping...
L/ove how he teaches others the things he's learned: treat others better, put them first, and make them happy which will make them want to make you happy. Precious pennies throughout the book!
I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.

Children's Book: "Flying Elephants and Other Stories" (Adventure Kids Books) Short Stories Collections and bedtime story books for kids by all ages, folklore ... Stories for Children Series (Volume 5))
Illustrated very colorful children's book. There are six different stories with written morals at the end of each one. Lots of animals and Gods creations.
Especially liked the six blind men as I am blind myself. Moral to this story is respect others views (they were all right in their own way). So many of these can be used in daily examples.
Other books by the author are highlighted at the end.

The Matchmaker -- Free Preview -- The First 5 Chapters: A Novel
This 5 chapter preview is about Dabney who lives on Nantucket and runs the Chamber of Commerce and is a matchmaker with much success.
The story also follows Box, her husband in alternating chapters.
Clen is expected from the far east to take up residency on the island. He had written to Dabney to warn her.
As the story goes on we find out what connection they have had to one another over the years and the rift that has kept them apart.
There are highlights of some of the couples she has brought together and their lives past and present. Story also follows Box and Dabney's life and how they met and started out and their secrets.
Found it confusing with all the other couples but know they will play a part in the big picture.
If given this book to read and review I would definitely read it, for the authors name-her stories are always good ones.

She has a breakup line for every season! All except Dexter who she wants to get rid of just before she heads to college, so will spend the summer with him and his band.
Not sure I like how the title came about-what it means to her and her father...
She has a heart of stone and maybe somebody will melt it, in time.

Next lightning strike hurts Sam. Is there anything left for them? Will their love for one another help them survive the storms? So close to some of the happenings in this book as I've gone through some of them myself.  So emotional and you know your whole life can change in the span of a minute-with the test results.
I didn't see the ending as it was written out, just so shocked by it all....
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Morning by Nancy Thayer
Editor living on the island and husband is a carpenter. She edits a romance and finds another book within the one she's editing.
She hopes to conceive but they are having problems.
Lots of jealousy as his old girlfriend is on the island and has had many kids. She tries a lot of different methods to conceive but nothing works. Very detailed descriptions of the exams and what she goes through.
Like hearing of the lifestyle on the island itself. So diversified.  Many scenes with others and their sexual problems. Very emotional.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Falling for Fortune by Nancy Robards Thompson
This book in the series starts out with Christopher and we learn he has gotten his name changed and is leaving out his paternal name. He has taken a job with the Fortune family company and one of his associates is Kinsley Aaron.
She thinks he is a playboy with his fancy car and money and beautiful woman at every turn. They are thrown together to work on a project, which I loved about this book. Found the romance to be typical and expected-no surprises. Bit of romance and sex.
Really loved the project of anti-bullying at the spring fling event and all it entails. They date for a bit then he is offered a new job with the company, but not in Texas but NYC. She must plan his going away party and doesn't have her whole heart in it.    Can he just leave her there?
At times there are a lot of characters-from previous books, but you do learn a bit about them and what he has drifted away from his own family. Also we larn of her past and how she can mend others, maybe even herself.
I received this book from Harlequin in exchange for my honest review.

Spencer's Mountain by Earl Hammer Jr.
Recalled the author's name from the creator of The Waltons.
Foothills in the VA mountain as the eldest boy is leaving to go to college-very similar to the Walton's. you will see the resemblances.
At the family house the whole crew of 9 sons gathered the day before Thanksgiving. The day they would all go hunt a deer.
The mill had closed but Uncle Virgil had a job in the city.  Clay boy looked up to him for everything!
Love the legend of the white deer and the one who brings it down wiill be marked. Love this vs. the TV show as everything is described in detail. So much nature and outside things along with family traditions of inside life.
So much action described, more than a one hour TV show, but a full year. Members of the family life's are changing...
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Dreamweaver Trail by Emily March
Love this series because there is so much to learn from the books.
This one is about Gabi and how she's on an island in the Caribbean to recuperate from a shooting incident that rattled her while she was a cop.
The story also follows Flynn who owns the Tradewinds on the island and a lot of property. They meet and she misunderstands and thinks he's just the pool boy.
Lots of action and careers are detailed. She is becoming a glass blower and is given the chance to go to Italy to learn the trade firsthand.
He has found the dog she was sitting for but has gone through a lot of torture and has disguised himself but headed to her hometown to heal. Others learn of his existence around town and others seek him out to help him and her get together.
Hot steamy sex scenes but misunderstandings happen and they split and you wonder if the powers that surround the area will bring them back together.
Loved learning of the step by step process of the glass blowing and his trade of designing things. Few main characters and a bunch of other relatives that live in town and so good to catch up with what's going on in their lifes. Love how she's able to see things and then can design them.
Excerpt from the next book in the series is included.
I received this book from Library Thing in exchange for my honest review.

Rival Hearts by Tara Randel
I have read most of the other books in this series and like the diversity of the settings and the whole learning how the quilt plays the main character.
This story is about Ben who's just returned to the Miami area and wants to grow roots there with the publishing company he works for. He's the outdoor extreme sports editor.
Molly is the quilt editor for that section of the publishing firm and she's heavily involved with other community agencies donating all her time for the cause of helping others.
They are both thrown a loop when the president of the company throws them into competition against one another. She must learn how to kayak and he must learn how to quit.
There are only so many hours in a day and time is of the essence as the competition heats up. They are also thrown together and have to spend more time covering for the president at his many events that he's not able to attend himself.
Love that Molly finds out why her mother always felt so cold to her and how they resolve that. Ben tags along a lot as she does other volunteer work and they get to talk to one another to find out why the other wants the lead position with the new office.
Getting out of your comfort zone-Love also that the quilts will go to Second Chances and for all it stands for. I am a great volunteer myself. Quite a surprise when the winner is announced! Handful of characters, easy to follow all the stories. Excerpt of the next A Grand Design is also included at the end.
I received this book from Net Galley via Abingdon Press in exchange for my honest review.

Here and Again  by Nicole R. Dickson
Have read the author's other works and loved the book and am looking forward to this book. It's a tale about the woods and trails which I strive to get to on the weekends.
We have traveled to the area of Shenandoah and have enjoyed it but didn't explore much about the battles. This book is about a family, a mother and her three children and they live on the mother in laws farm in Virginia.
She is  a nurse and travels to work some shifts quite a distance from home. She was raised in Seattle, WA and has found a home on the farm. Others have been caring for it as her husband is fighting a war in Afghanistan.
Decisions must be made when he is killed. Others in the family want the old woman to sell the farm but the farm was to go to the man's children.
The story is also about a solider back in the Civil War days. He'd write to his true love as she and her family escaped to head further south to avoid the turmoil. Love the violet hour and the saga of the buttons. Quite a unique tale as this author knows how to bring them both together in one story.
I received this book from Edelweiss by Penguin Group (USA) Inc.in exchange for my honest review.

Silent Night by Mary Higgins Clark
Love Christmas tales and this will be my first book by this author.
The family is in the city for an emergency surgery for their father and the mother drops her wallet. Those who find it have plans on how to spend the money.
A St. Christopher medal that had saved the grandfather's live during the war. The young child follows the woman who has taken the wallet....
Story also follows others, and we learn about how they play a part in all this. What I liked about this story is it's the holidays and people relatively have good thoughts to one another.
The plot doesn't follow the usual predicted line where you know what's gonna happen. Lots of twists and I like how the detectives help with the clues they have and those of ones they learn about. Really liked this book and will find others of the author to read.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

A Painted House by John Grisham
Story about a house that's never been painted. Lots of colorful characters, 1952 with lots of baseball talk.
Mexicans and hill people come to aid in picking the crops. About the author's real childhood experiences in the cotton field.
80 acres rented planted with cotton. Nature gets in the way and the 7yr old hears things and sees things that will change their lives forever.
Love these stories. the author makes you feel like you are right there with them.and with the descriptions you can feel the same emotions.
Such a different life from what I grew up with, love learning about others. A lot of the story surrounds the brother who's serving his country in the military and the family hopes to see him soon.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Lost Lake by Sarah  Addison Baker
Lots of memories at the lake and she brings her daughter there to relive the good times.
Alternating chapters of past and present with the characters. One chance at keeping the resort is at the big event that others hadn't thought of.
Love, closure, is what others find at the lake...loved hearing of the magic spell the charms hold...
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Wyoming Bold by Diana Palmer
Dalton Kirk has retired from being a border guard and is settling down on his family ranch where he lives with others in the family and their spouses and children.
Marissa designs websites and has visions of Dalton being hurt and now her life is in danger also. She's always loved Dalton. She tells him of things he had forgotten about and gives him hints on how to protect others that work on the ranch.
Some do come true and he tracks down the sheriff in TX and they have some of the same memories.
Dalton puts in surveillance cameras and now he has fears they are the enemy after all...lots of action, adventure, mystery, sex scenes and drug lords, conflicts... what an ending, can't wait for the next book...
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

 Christmas at the Mysterious Bookshop
17 mystery writers are given a task each Christmas to come up with a very short story surrounding one item-the bookstore in NYC.
I liked the stories and some I felt I didn't get the whole thing because they were so short. Going to get other works by the authors and read their longer works as they were interesting to listen to.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Boston designer Olivia Frost friend Marilyn is taking her clients from her!

She is able to spend time with her father and discusses her plans of catering and teaching about herbs as the gardens unveil themselves.
Dylan arrives in MA from the west coast and comes upon a dog. It's Olivia's dog Buster that attached himself to her.
Talk of her mother's planning a trip to PCH. one we have ventured to and loved.  The mother has bad anxiety and Olivia's sister thinks she might have it also. So overwhelmed and picking up things her mother no longer does has stressed her out.
They talk about their goals and find they do have common ground...Love all the conversations about water, field stone walls, and living off the land.
Love all the travel and nature scenes.

Fix, Freeze, Feast: Meals for a Busy Family
Starts out explaining the process of a menu, the grocery list and how easy it is to prepare a bunch of meals at one time and freeze them for use later.
Lots of tips along the way. Some recipes show a picture but there is nutritional information listed.
Like the idea of breads and muffins-those you can grab and pop in the micro for 10 seconds and have a quick treat.
