The Checkered War by Aunt Haggis
Didn't think I'd like this book that is mainly written for a middle grade child but I so much enjoyed it on many aspects of it.
The book could be about humans (or ants) and how they go about surviving and how.
Love hearing of the army tactics as we travel cross country once a year to play army guys with out grandson and we are always not only having fun but using strategics.
Love the colony that bake and what they do to gather their supplies so they can win the war with a cake!
So many fun facts about the different types of ants after every chapter.
At times the chapters become confusing because you are not fully sure which colony you are referring to. There are 3 and each have such different jobs for the colony.
Glossary of words used are included at the end. Love how everybody is good at something and when combined-it's an awesome outcome. Amazing at the end-didn't see it going down like this! Can't wait to read more from this author.
Love the idea of gifting an ant farm to my grandson-think he'd enjoy it.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
A CRAZY OPTIMIST by Anne Greene
Sparkle lives in NY, 5 months now and makes a living as a pet taxidemist. Work is getting hard to find so she posts an ad on CraigsList as a professional Maid for Honor and gets lots of work.
Nick is her friend and she visits him at his place and they talk. She talks him into escorting her to the events and the comedy part of this is hilarious. Won't spoil it by telling you the events that occured but I had tesrs in my eyes if that's any indication of how funny it all was. Then when you think it can't get any funnier, it does.
She realizes she has to break off from Nick because of his outlook on life.
She owes him a picnic and love where they end up and all the new things I learn-so precious because my father and grandfather were nurseymen.
She goes on with her life without stopping in on Nick and while exercising she needs to protect herself like no other time. Terror of the fire I found threating and wondered what I'd do in her place.
Religion is a large part of this story also as she relies on God in many instinces.
She only wants friendship with him because of her past-she does tell him in time and she knows they can never be together.
Very few characters, great story to see how each reacts to different situations. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
Candy Kid and his Adventures (Start eating Healthy food) by Danny Calderon
Colorful children's story about Andy. Tablet has to be held side to side so you can see the words and picture as the book is opened up.
Everybody calls Andy, Candy Andy and we learn why. Others would eat healthy foods and he'd only eat cakes and candy. He has some visitors and the next day he's asking for real food to eat. He wants to become strong.
Another book by the author is highlighted at the end.
Jack and the Case of the Missing Sandwich (A Jack and Sweetie Mystery Book 1) by D J Romeo
Colorful children's story They think it might be the dog, Jack as he was around the time the peanut butter sandwich went missing from the table...
Jack, the dog gets his investigative equipment together and will use his magnifying glass to help solve the mystery by fidning clues.
He gets clues from others to help.
Guppy Butter by Kevin Penelerick
Starts out with a story about how when the boy was 8 his dad brought home a puppy-the child had said guppy.
Goes on to tell the story of the fish he had also wanted when he was younger.
Colorful pictures along the way of this children's colorful story book.
He picked out some of his toys to give to the guppy...
Next chapter is about fido-the guppy. The children' have fun with him but not for long either...
Yoga Beginner: Easy Yoga Poses, Best Weight Loss Exercises, Health and Fitness, Yoga Asanas, Yoga Basic Poses, Basic Yoga Postures by Anna Shine
There is a lot of information in here about not only yoga, but diet and meditation. There are a lot of technical terms and they do show the positions of yoga and explain how to do them.
What I don't get is why repeat half the book in the 7 day yoga program by showing all the poses and how to do them all over again?
Good starting tool but I've seen so many others that do justice to yoga.
Grandma’s Simple Cookbook:OMG EZ 120 Recipes by Mary Jo Montanye
Table fo contents where recipes are not in any special order.
Short intro about the grandmother and also list of spices that will help with your nutrtiion.

Directions on how to make are included.
There are no pictures-there is NO nutritional information.
Some recipes list the servings.
Like all the recipes of things you can pick from your garden and preserve or use right away.
Starts out with her leaving BC, Canada and heading to France=not her first choice for one year of school abroad.
Lots of travel and new things for her to get used to. The girl that she's taking the place of is leaving to head to the USA for her year abroad.
Lots of things to consider and wonder about as she is served coffee in a bowl rather than a mug.
She had studied French in school but didn't like it so didn't learn so much. She is able to pick out a few words when others are talking. When she arrives her lugguage didn't make it-lucky she had packed shorts and a shirt in her carryon bag.
After spendng a day at the grandmothers they arrive back at the familys house where there is a older son who speaks English who's most helpful to her lack of speaking in French.
After school starts she finds everything so confusing. Especially love the lesson in how to taste wine-i knew some of the parts but not all of them. Love that there are grapes nearby and by the title know I will learn more about the vineyard.
For the most part there is French being spoken and she has no idea what's being said-she can't study that way or learn anything and the book does not translate what is being said to us reading it.
There are four different host families that she stays with and she learns so much about the culture. There is food everywhere and it's described so much in detail you get hungry.
Laura is able to learn and harvest the grapes and the processes of making the wine. Learned so much about the grapes, so glad I read this book from the start to the finish.
Loved the four major parts of a good wine and how to tell once it's poured.
Her friend has a brother and when she meets him it's love at first sight....love family gatherings and all the food.
Especially liked the places visited, so much detail to descriptons.
Excerpt from the next book in the series is included at the end.

Year One by Nora Roberts
Book starts out overseas a couple has attended end of the year celebrations with family and return to NY after the first.
The husband becomes deadly sick and gives it to his wife who also dies soon after. The daughter is pregnant with twins and her husband has died from the virus.
The OB and EMT keep the woman going strong. There is another group of newspaper reporters and they strike out to get the real on the street story to report on. There is also another group of people who have strange powers and use them to keep safe.
There is also a group that want the cannies-those with powers - to die. There is no hope for a cure.
Found this book similar to the tv show=revolution except this one has magic. They all learn to survive and all have skills they bring to the table to share with all.
Good read, hard at times with harsh conditions to listen to about.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Chasing the Music by Mark Alan Leslie
Book starts out with Dan and he's just discovered a miracle tablet of information on the archelogical dig. Soon others with weapons are tearing through the site and he escapes, tumbles down hills on his way to the highway and maybe safety. He gets injured and shot and makes a call to another doctor but she's hours away and gives her a hint of what he found.
Her car is dead and she grabs a ride with Max who has connections with the police to get them to the site and they arrive to Dan waking up on his way to the hospital.
Lots of action and love the information about the achealogical dig and what was uncovered. Lots of praying throughout the book along with quotes from the bible.
Love all the travel and the trouble they find along the way as others are tailing them....
Received this review copy via TBCN from Amazon site and this is my honest review.
Past perfect by Steel_ Danielle
Cybil and Blake married almost 20 years and they have 3 kids-2 in high school and one in first grade, born and raised in NYC and love it there.
Blake gets an offer in San Fran and goes out to check it out-there is nothing that will keep him from going there and making tons of money-he has to persuade his wife and kids to go also...
Not only did he take the job but bought a huge house, very old for them to move into.
20,000 square feet 1902 house with storage that included all art and furniture. Cybil loves the place and the move will give her time to finish writing her book and still do design work if the offers come.
They all arrive with their high tech devices and it's quite the contrast to what the house is all about...
Eathquake occurs and things are moved to new locations prior to that.... Youngest keeps thinking there are hidden passages and ghosts...
Cybil had seen the prior residents as ghosts and tries to explain what she saw when she sees the pictures on the walls.
She reads the family historical book and finds out who they all are and calls in someone who specializes in ghosts and he tells her they feel comfortable there and she wants them gone!
Like how the families meld but i still think it's very weird. What Cybil finds in the book and acts on it is really weird! Servants think the whole family is crazy talking to themselves as they can't see the old family.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
The Beach Club By Hilderbrand_ Elin
Hotel on the island and many come to work there to find love and other things.
Quite the mix of people work and come to stay for a bit during the warm summer months to be waited on hand and foot.
So many to follow and all the drama of the island.
Interesting to learn of all the jobs the men have to do prior to the sun rising so guests will have everything ready when they wake up and want to hit the beach.
Lovers, some cheat on spouses, one looking for a man to father her child, others looking for huge tips so they go out of their way to please the guests.
Things go awry and people leave as the summer goes on-some run off to other countries, some bail on the bill, some leave to try new ventures and then a hurricane is forecast to hit-only a little bit, or will it hit them full on?
Surprise ending for all.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
Spur of the Moment by Marcia Lee Laycock
Enjoyed this book because of the contents. Most of the chapters are spoken of real things that happened, a moment in time that got the author to link them to a passage in the Bible.
Devotionals, there are so many in this book! They are broken up into chapters of like things devoted to the headings.
Loved hearing of all the adventures the author and her pastor husband have taken around the world.
Author bio at the end.

Don't condone the use of canned beans-they contain too much sodium-make them fresh.
Not all recipes start at the top of a new page. Some of the book does, not all of it.
CROSSOVER(Christian Adventure) (THE CHASER CHRONICLES Book 1)

Maggie's Miracle
Riverton, WI 1918
Memorial Day celebrations and we find Maggie Winters with her friend Louise and she feels like she's going to faint. There are so many there, to hear her sing.
Very descriptive details as to the weather and surroundings to make you feel like you are there with them.
Prayers to the Lord along the way to help her get through it all, she needs a miracle. She is to perform a song she wrote, to commemorate all those who fight for the freedom of citizens of US.
Maggie runs into a man, confesses things to her that make her feel proud of what she's done after talking about his time during the war and it makes him feel brave.
Very short story but you get the gist of how this author writes and what's impoartant. You will like the rest of her works below.

Sarah's Smile (The Daughters of Riverton, #1) by Dawn Kinzer
Riverton, WI 1902
Book starts out with Sarah and she's working in the store when she meets Peter's child. They had grown up and knew one another since the age of 8 and he left for college and met Lilly and married her. She had died and he decided to move back to town and stay with his sister with his child. He's now a pastor and Sarah's path crosses his often as she also leads groups in the religious learnings.
We learn about Sarah's past and she feels she's living her parents past and looked down on over the years as her mother had left her for her grandmother to raise her.
Lvve hearing the passages from the Bible and how they help to justify the decisions and outcome. She needs to overcome the hurt she's feeling and move on.
Like how she wants to match the music at the service with his sermon.
She has plans to follow other missionaries to Africa very soon... Like the connection Peter's sister Ellie have with Sarah and how he choose Rebecca the school teacher to tend to daily needs of his daughter.
Like that Will is also interested in her besides the pastor and he doesn't want her to leave the area.
What I do like are unpredictable scenes.
Asking for forgiveness-what a great way to make friends.
Easy to keep character straight as there are a handful of them. Like hearing of the everyday life and work they each do and their past-helps to understand why they have strong feelings towards different subjects.
Love how he's able to talk to the blacksmith and hear how he works his problems out. Love also how Sarah helps others with money by sharing her plants at home.
When her whole world falls apart she continues to listen to God for guidance. She has her faith still. What I like about his section is that it's similar to things that continue to happen today, being bullied and how they overcome it. Never saw this ending coming as it did.
Discussion q&a at the end. Author bio included. Other works by the author are highlighted.

Riverton, WI 1904
What I like from the very start is that Hope is a talented fashion designer and Ben, a secret has some hidden talents as well.
They are thrown together as his brother Jake likes Annie-Hope's cousin who she will be staying with for an extended time.
Like hearing of the Panama construction and the descriptions of what goes on there.
What I also like is connecting with others from the previous book, but you are brought up to date, not left in the dark about them.
I also am a fashion designer so this book is fascinating for me.
Hope has a huge secret that she doesn't want others to learn about-Annie knows and will keep her confidence.
Love how color strikes Hope and Ben also and it's a large part of the things they see in daily life.
Daisies-I also grow them myself and with my blue ktichen they fit perfect.
They find many of the same interests but she has to keep her distance because of her past secrets-she doesn't want to go through them again.
Hope becomes upset when Ben didn't stick up for others fighting...Jake informs her it is up to Ben to tell her....
Love all the discussions of the library and the fashion industry (Butterick and tatting, even memories of playing pinochle) and how Ben knows combinations of colors that go well together...through her tears (happy ones) she finds what he was hiding.
Like how they bring Rebecca into their circle.
Hope takes it upon herself to promote Ben's work......then her ex fiancée shows up....
Love hearing how the youngest are kept busy along with everyone up to the elders in the community.
Thanksgiving holds special memories for those gathered around the table...
Discussions q&a at the end. Author bio included. Other works by the author are highlighted.

This one starts out with a scene from the war. Next it's onto a family vacation in TN and I had forgotten about kudzu-wanted to bring some home to RI with us once.
There are a lot of people, couples and those who are single and not everybody gets along with everyone. Brett is the college bound boy who's hot on Kirstin who is still 16 and is holding out for marriage years down the road. He wants sex now.
Matt had some words with others after his return from the war and they all try to avoid one another. Alex, married to Emma is the brother who set up the whole thing and he enlists Matt to keep an eye on Brett.
Seth and Rachel are engaged to be married... Love the setting and how it's all described. Gwen and Jeff had recently got married.
Love hearing of all the fun things they are doing: rope swings, pontoon boat, kayaks and discovering the islands.
Frightful horrendous events occur...family handle sit all and then some.
This book has something for everyone-travel, mystery, thriller, romance and family life. So much action and adventure. Unpredictable, full of surprises.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
Twice Loved by D. M. Hamblin
Found the book a bit confusing at first til I realized there are many stories that are being followed and there are a lot of characters.
Liked hearing how a few of the couples were able to resolve their problems over the years and the events that took place.
Others were able to forgive those who had done a bad thing that hurt them.
Loved hearing of the Boston area nd Maine locations as I am familiar with the areas.
Loved learning of new things from the trip to Alaska. Love how they rely on God, especially when their whole world is upside down with health issues.
Such scary situations and I feel as if I am there, so terrifying and so unpredictable. There's a lot to this book and it all becomes unraveled the more you read.
Something for everyone in this book.
Author bio included at the end. Highlights from other novels are included.

Trapping the Butterfly! by Debra Parmley
Bethany lives with her aunt and uncle living off the inheritance her parents left her when they died. Ten years we find her within a few days of becoming 18 years of age.
They all travel to Hot Springs, Arkansas for a business day and also for the hot springs to help Aunt Margaret with her health problems. We've traveled through some locations on the west coast Sol Duc where the springs are open to the public but I never knew there were so many procedures involved.
The area offers music and individual rooms for men and women. As she reads outside she meets a dectective Paul and he's warned her to stay away from the 4th floor-bad men are abundant in the area. She's agree to accompany Richard-the business partner to be on a date for a musical that she's looking forward to.
She learns more about Paul and enjoyed the butterfly discussion. Bethany is also taking the baths but it leaves her light headed as her aunt has made the corset very tight.
Bethany has a plan and it's the 1920's and she wants to be like other females-the flappers and she meets Suki who helps her with the plan.
Paul keeps her under surveillance....during prohibition-for some.
She gets to step out and meets up with Rocco and others that look and act like gangsters...Paul had warned her though...the races are next...Southern club for dancing.
Her guardians have taken drastic measures...scary things start happening and she has no idea what to do.
Love her choices of what she wants to do with the rest of her life. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end.
Love the locations, very descriptive details, butterfly meanings, springs, flappers and all the other information I learned.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
Dancing Butterfly by Debra Parmley
Second book in the series so I'm familiar with the time frame and a few other things that occur during the book.
This book starts out with Suki and she's with Rocco and other gangsters as they frequent the club room where she dances as a showgirl.
She has a fondness for Frank who tries to protect her. Love learning of the tunnels under Chicago.
Erotic sex scenes mixed in with the relationship they have just started.
We learn about Tessa also as she plays a part in this story.
The return to Chicago brings her in contact with Bethany and she wants to teach her everything so she can fly away and be free-which is what Suki wants to do...
Tragic events and she knows she needs a change. Liked book and the things I learned. Didn't really care for erotic sex scenes.
Author bio at the end and highlights of her other works are highlighted.

Her Reluctant Hero by Anne Greene
Have read other works by the author and enjoyed them. This one starts out with Laura Richards and she's being rescued from a burning house.
Josh Landford is the part time fireman who had rescued her and she ran into him many times at college in TX since he transferred to the college she'd be attending after the fire.
He doesn't believe he was a hero and was awarded a medal but she thanks him for saving her life and she bought him dinner. Years later they are dating but taking things slow.
Book then advances a few years and we find Josh had broken the engagement as she is on a plane as a stewardess with Josh.
She loses her trust with the magazine article that came out. Love how the gift he gave her kept them in touch with one another.
After his war assignments he has found God. Swinging 60's and mixed messages draw them further from one another.
Love the direction this book goes from then as they realize God is with each of them. So realistic and a fun story to read. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end.

Resisting The Doctor by Patricia W. Fischer
Am familiar with the setup of Marietta and thought I'd enjoy this book. This is a new to me author to read.
Book starts out with Dr. Lucy Davidsons and they've just had a patient that rolled in that wanted out...fast.
Love the scene by scene descriptions as I do watch medical drama shows on tv and I can feel myself being there with them.
Like hearing of the patients and their problems and how they are being cured after finding a diagnosis.
Lucy needs to prove herself to others and hopes to take charge of the ER soon.
Another doctor, Thomas had arrived in town a bit ago and he's fascinated with the knowledge Dr. Lucy has.
Like hearing Thomas side to what's going on and Lucy's side as she takes order and puts things in order.
We learn different things from the past about each and the puzzle pieces fit nicely.
Love hearing of the other shops in town that are visited-like refreshing my mind of places gone to before in other works by other authors.
Like hearing of the conflict when new characters are introduced til you realize how they play a part in the story.
Misunderstandings and confrontations til a solution is found. Liked this author and looking forward to the next in the series.
Hot steamy sex scenes. Really like medical parts of this, didn't think I would.
Loved the scenery as we are hikers also.

Punk Rock Cowgirl by Kasey Lane
Didn't think I was going to like this because I myself are not into punk rock but I did enjoy it, woohoo another new author for me to read.
Starts out with Kendall and she's returned to her grandmother's town where she was raised. She is now gone and she's there for the funeral and her husband, Damian shows up to comfort her.
She gets a rude awakening as the will is read. She had no idea. She assumed she'd walk back into town, get someone to sell her grandmothers house and she'd be on her way back to the city and performing her rock hits.
This is anything far from that. What I really liked was not only the compassion from her husband but hearing of how she was brought up by her grandmother and all the memories living on the farm.
Like the ideas Damian has for that and how he takes care of her also. Lots of hidden secrets that come out over time. What rotten luck to have been pushed away to begin with-you wonder if they can truly get back together or they will get divorced. Did not like swearing, just seemed to not fit.
Liked the locale and love the ending-wraps it all up!
Can't wait to read more from this author.

Wool Studio The Knitwear Capsule Collection by Meghan Babin
Loved the picture on the front and even more once I read the description of this book. Can't say enough good things about this book.
Love the drape in the high end photographs in this book. Have given away two of my sweaters-long cardigans and am in the market to make new ones and the ideas in this book are just what I needed.
Can't decide to which one to try first. Love that the patterns are easy-easy for me and I love the names of the areas on the West and East coasts as I've been through many.
Some of the pattern names on their respective pages are hard to read-dark on dark print or light on light print.
Introdcution talks about the fun things in this book, the designs and what to expect ahead.
The yarn really makes the drape and flirtiness keeping the style glamourous and feminine I feel.
Each pattern starts out with a brief summary of the item and how it's assembled and worked.
Finished size measurements, yarn to be used and what was used in the finished product, needles required, notions, gauge, and other notes.
Stitch guide also gives details of special stitches in the pattern. Very easy to follow-there is no level rating. Some designs are spelled out row by row and then til what length, some are charted on graph style paper.
Like the diagram of the finished item and how each section has a letter corresponding to the finished measurements.
Cowls I also found so stunning. Love infinity scarves-even have my husband wearing his now for warmth.
Charted patterns are very self explanatory and easy to follow along, be sure to read the whole pattern all the way through before you begin.
Yarn resources are mentioned, love the section on all the designers, they leave me inspired from the work they do. Other works by the designers are highlighted at the end.

50 Hikes with Kids Oregon and Washington by Wendy Gorton
Wanted to review this book because we are heading from the east coast to visit with our daughter and her family on the west coast in a few months.
We love day trips and getting out and exploring, walking around and learning new things about the area.
The grandson will be 12 so we've been going out there every April for 12 years and we always plan day trips. This book has all the information I need for a whole week of day trips.
We have traveled also through Oregon so that is just a bonus for us if we spend anytime there this trip.
What I really like from the start are that the hikes are under 4 miles in length and 3 levels of skill to navigate them and love the idea of the scavenger hunt.
Very colorful pictures in this book that show the real deal.
Book starts with a table of contents where the chapters are broken up into the two states and areas.
Preface gives you an idea of how this book all came about.
Next chapter is choosing your adventure where the information of the hiking areas, their loction, length and skill level and hihglights are all charted out for you. You can plan by the level, miles or the location.
There are also charts that are arranged by features: lakes, waterfalls, , history, flora, fauna, geology, caves (hadn't even thought to look for those in our treks) sumits and peaks, rivers, beaches, campgrounds.
Also a section on the seasons as some may be closed during rainy/muddy winter seasons. Has a chart that tells you which ones will be open during which seasons. This information will save me a TON of hours on the phone or net finding it.
Love the section for preparing for your trip as I am the one usually in charge of all this part. Lots of useful information here more about the trails, parking, getting there, fees. Love the section about the scavenger hunt especially the geocaching as the grandson will want to use an app to help us navigate around the area.
They have apps to help you identify the plants and flowers-we use it all the time. We are also photographers-a hobby so power ups will come in handy.
I pack the first aid kit, snacks and drinks for all so this is a good reminder of things along the way for me. Nature journal can also be spoken into your phone as it's recording what you are seeing. Just make sure to save them all when you get home for safe keeping.
Each specified section starts with the title of where you are going and a map along with a summary of the tour adventure.
There are many pictures and a very detailed map showing length of the hike, elevation changes, level of skill, best season to to, getting there,, restroom locations, fee, parking and how to treat yourself after you are done in the local area. other phone numbers are included.
The scanvenger hunt begins with specfic things you should have no problem finding and a bit about each item: animal, bug, tree, flower, etc
We've been to many areas and I feel like we missed out on seeing and doing some things mentioned in this book. We may have to go back to them with the tips they provide so we can do it all. Acknowledgements and photo and illustration credits are also given at the very end along with an index and author bio.
LOVE this book, it's a KEEPER! for us.
