Books read Apr 2019

Deadly Defiance by William Manchee
Have enjoyed all the other works I've read from this author and the saga continues in this one.
We find that Stan has taken on another lawyer and Jodie-his research assistant is now a full fledge lawyer herself.
They each have their own cases and it's interesting to learn the new lingo and to find out how they figure things out for each of their cases.
This one has twists as Stan's wife Rebekka is also undergoing some medical problems that they have no answers for...Like rhythm of the office with the 3 of them.
Can't wait to read the next one. The stories are so real and things that are happening occur in present day situations.
I received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

The Adventures of Bang-Bang Man by Philip Nork
Story of Matt who is now single, he's lost his wife and kids to divorce and they don't bother with him anymore.
Only thing important to him is betting and the horses. VInnie-the landlord of his complex sets him up with a computer and teaches him how to use it for betting.
That's after he's been tossed off the grounds of the horse facility where he used to bet and argue with the the drivers that made him lose his money.
Over the years he learns he can order anything online and have it delivered. His house is a mess and he gets into chat areas where he states one time the left side of his body is numb.
Vinnie tends to him and Matt wakes up in the hospital where he'd suffered a heart attack. With help from so many he's able to change his life around and even lose 300 pounds.
Those who do care about him, and he thought he had none, come to talk to him and that gives him enough promise to continue on and show progress.
It just takes that one person in his life to change it all around.
Like this story because it tells me of what really happens behind the scene with the horses and also about not only heart attacks but stomach surgery which my girlfriend had just undergone.
Felt so sorry for Matt when he hit bottom and glad he changed his habits to better his life.
Never give up, someone is always there for you.

Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

The Summer Cottage by Viola Shipman
Love the idea of this book and was very close to doing something similar when my mother passed away and left her estate to the children. I was 1 of the 5 but others wanted to sell the houses and land.
Adie Lou always wanted it to become a quilt retreat where others would go and spend time on the quiet island and learn how to quilt and be taught how to do so-you could live in the houses and be fed. Just sold last house a week ago.
Starts out with a woman who's going through a divorce, her son is going to her ex's school, tuition paid for and she's at lost ends with her job. Cashes in and heads back to the house on the lake where she grew up. She wants to turn int into a B&B but others in town have other ideas.
She needs to meet their standard of approval. She then seeks out help from the locals who can do the work she needs done to improve the house/rooms and the boat so she can take guests out on sundown cruises on the lake.
Love how she struggles and gets the jobs done!  This would make an awesome movie as all the scenes are described in great details.
Love the rules of the cabin-priceless!  Love hearing what her name means, history of fish cottage.
Love how her girlfriend and her son both help with the project-they are so resourceful.
Love hearing the story of the author's childhood, very similar to mine during the summer months. Brothers used to work on the ferry-not chain driven-you had to just throw a heavy rope over the piling, LOL
Like instructions on how to make a sand castle=so cool! Like this romantic love story intwined with the beach story. Notes from the author at the end.
Reader's guide is also enclosed.
Received this review copy from HARLEQUIN - Graydon House Books (U.S. & Canada) Graydon House Romance, Women's Fiction via Netgalley and this is my honest opinion.

Caught by surprise by Jen Turano
Thought from the summary of this book it was not one I'd be enjoying, thinking of abduction and things smilar to SVU from tv shows.
I was totally wrong and this is a fun read. Temperance is abducted and Gilbert is the one to find her-in Chicago. She tells him of her ordeal, her old time friend who they grew up together.
Just when you think the Pinkerton man has found the culprits other clues come into play. and just when you think it's been solved again, MORE clues are told.
So many secrets from the past come to light making the mysteries believeable.
Love hearing of how astritic she is in everything she touches. Like mention of the Vanderbilts and Astors from Newport, RI and their cottages-we had just visited one of the marble mansions and I can see how theses characters would fit right in.
This book is not only about Temperance but others, Clementine and all the others who come to play a part.
So many twists and turns, very unpredictable.
I was able to listen to this from the National Library Service and each character had their own voice-was a fun read for me.
Although this is book 3 it can be read as a stand alone.

Mother's Day with Snowman Paul by Yossi Lapid
Colorful children's book that rhymes and tells and shows how great Dan's mother is.
Paul is a snowman and he teaches us how he was born and about Mother Nature. So cool as we just celebrated Earth Day.
Very colorful pictures of the actions that are spoken.
Love the ending showing a lot of different animals and people with their mothers.
About the author is included and the photographer Joanna Pasek.
Free coloring book linked at the end. Praise and other works by the author is highlighted at the end.
Perfect Mother's Day gift for all to enjoy.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

If Only I'd Listened by Claire Boley
About the author starts this novel off then a dedication page.
Story starts with Samantha and her life about when she met Peter and their relationship began.
She had called her mom to tell her about her predicament and now they are in front of her parents getting a talking to about abortion and how could they have sex before school even ended.
They are asked to leave and never come back so head to Peter's house where the family dynamic is the opposite of Sam's house.
Scary, to me, situations when they leave there to go to the callbox so they can find a place for Sam to spend the night...
Not familiar with the England slang but most of it I could understand the content meaning. Tragic events follow them when they are both trying to survive and move into adulthood.
Quite a few characters come into the picture-to help them and to deter them from just having fun and being a teen.
I recall an aunt of mine also had to go to a nun's house to birth her child til the father could care for them during the 1960's in the US. Can't even imagine the obstacles they faced although this story goes into details about that and more.
Kinda didn't like the ending unless there is another book in the series. Ends but you don't know what paths they take from there on-use your imagination I guess.
Enjoyed this new author to me writing style and would like to read more of her works.
I received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Taking Love In Stride by Donna Fasano
Story about Andrea and she teaches PE at high school level. One of the girls, Denise is not really interested in sports, running or anything physical.
She loves to paint but she's afraid to tell her dad. Problem is he shows up at the school demanding his daughter run in the marathon because of his father...
By the time the principal has talked she is being told she must teach the dad how to run in order to get money for school equipment.
She sees him as being too busy for not only his daughter-which he knows nothing about but he's always flying somewhere for work and has no time to train.
He is putting his best foot forward to train and she puts him through lots of struggles. He has sore muscles after the work out but he's determined to keep going...
There is some conflicts along the way with other things that come to light... Like hearing how this book comes out in the end, quite a feat!
Would like to read more from this author-good attention to details and descriptions. Few characters so it's easy to keep track of them.
Note from the author is included at the end and list of other works by the author are highlighted at the end.
Free from Amazon and this is my honest opinion.

Not all recipes contain a color photo.
Some of the ingredients are foreign to me also: erythiritol.
Some recipes include the use of a cake mix rather than baking from scratch.
Some recipes call for canned tomatoes because of the sodium we prefer to use fresh ones and dice them ourselves.
Format of list of ingredient changes throughout the book, sometimes they use T for tablespoon, sometimes it's spelled out-no consistency.
Not impressed with this book.

Ellis Lighthouse mysteries of the North Atlantic by Cahill_ Robert
What a super book to read. History of the lighouses, lightships and other things relating to them.
Goes all the way above maine to Canadian provicnes and stories of their lighthouses over the years.
Best part for me as I've visited all the ones you can walk to in the US on the NE coast was when they talk about the 1938 hurricane that came up
the coast with a 70 foot wall of water-hurricane, tsumani, whatever it was it hit Prudence Island where I grew up. I was not born then but know the history of the island.
Now everyone else can learn it also. Like the legends and myths of those  clipper ghost ships making their appearances.
So much to treasure as I've been to most of them myself but didn't know all the hidden stories.
Beautiful history lessons.

Firenze's Light by Jessica Collaç
Children's book so I'm not sure why the letters and words are so tiny. Even using the tablet you can not easily increase the words to read them.
Pages are dark in color and background. Coudln't see the words to read them, maybe they can be enlarged the next revision?

E-I-E-I-O_ how old MacDonald got his farm by Sierra_ Judy
Listened to this story. Story of how Mac got his farm. Love how this is the perfect story for starting youngsters into gardening.
Mac didn't want to mow his lawn. He's tired of doing that....he got a goat who would nibble at the edges then he'd eat the hedges.
He then got a chicken, she told him how to put newspaper, shirt, water from rain and he had mud then. The neighbors protested, they didn't like the changes.
Garbage will make things better as they layered the kitchen waste and he continued to get more animals.
Compost it came to be and he got seeds, and before he knew it he had a garden that was growing food.

1-800-IRELAND: A Sweet Contemporary Romance Novella (Flipping For You Book 3) by Josie Riviera
Another great story from the author.
Have followed this series and enjoyed them all.
This one starts out with Kathleen who's relocated from Ireland to NC, a small town called Roses. She lives above her new store-a tea house serving real Irish bread to name a few items on her menu.
Candy, the one who set up the apartment and saw to all the new owners needs from the US side also has notified Rob, her friend in FL who bakes cakes and cupcakes in his own shop.
He's older and not quite the catch of the day-love this that he's just a regular guy and kinda out of shape.
kathleeen has it set in her dreams about her shop but Maureen knows she will need help. Rob needs time away from his own shop so travels there to see what it will need, in his opinion to make it a success.
He never expected to find Kathleen so charming! Like the challenge they take part it. So many lovely detailed descriptions, I can just picture it for real.
Loved hearing all about starting up the business-priceless information!
Some characters from the series make an appearance but you are given all details aobut them so you're not left in the dark.
This can be read as a standalone! Irish slang words are explained in the conversations they have.
Misunderstandings and you wonder if they will ever get back together to see if they have what it takes to be a couple.
Recipe included! Note from the author is included at the end.
Acknowledgements and about the author is included. Offer to join first readers group.
Other works by the author are highlighted at the end.  Excerpt from Maeve is also included.

Story starts out with Candee (works at the local hardware store) and she lives with her sister, Desiree (works at country club) and she's into real estate. She bids on the mansion at the end of the street and noone has lived in it for many years.
She hopes no one else wants to buy it-it's in Roses, NC. Story also follows Teddy and his friend (Rob) in FL and they are into helping his nephew who needs medical surgeries. Teddy meets her and expects a woman over 50 as the real estate business has been operating for over 30 years.

He and his friend hope to flip a house for a living. She is heavily into beagle dogs and volunteers also at no kill shelter. Misunderstanding and you wonder if they will ever be together again...

They spend time together as in a date after the work day has finished. Love how she sprinkles Christmas all over the house-it sounds very festive with his hel of the huge tree.
His father wanted him to pursue his football career and Keiran just wants to open his own pub and cook food. He has many special family recipes and they sound delicious.
She needs a stable guy and Keiran doens't even know if he wants to do carpentry or run the pub so she needs to set him straight...

Maeve Perfect Match Series by Josie Riviera
Love how this series, all standalones with a common theme, came to be, so cool!
This book starts out with Maeve and she's been so busy tending to her ailing brother and working and her friends notice it also. The match site owners want her to try out their service-pick an island and spend the alloted time together with her perfect match, while the company takes photos of them enjoying each other and the location.
She makes arrangements and ends up going to her island of choice, Corsica. Love the reasons why she wants to go there. She is treated with high regard when she arrives-eveything is seen to and her match have itinerary they are following-places to see, things to do, and relaxing. She is a purchaser of hotel equipment.
Story also is folling Edward and he is part owner of a huge company that is interested in making another resort-that's why he wants to go to the location-to take photos of the area and to see if it will work. He and Maeve do spend a lot of time together, getting to know one another and they are really from the different parts of society that you know it will never work out for their match.
Love the things they do, how caring each is to the other, especially love the food topics and sights and surprises. One doesn't go as planned when they meet up with Edward's friends and they really make her see a different side to Edward. Upon return she is summoned back to Ireland, an emergency. You know it was too good to be true.
Note from the author about the location, recipe included, acknowledgements, About the author and list of other works by the author are included at the end along with an excerpt from the next book.
I received this review book from the author and this is my honest opinion.

...
Oh Danny Boy by Josie Riviera
This book starts out with praise for the author's writings.
Book starts out in Ireland and her brother Seammus is on the bridge, about to jump and probably drunk as he's griefing still over the death of his wife.
A man will go with her to stop him as they climb the rusty bridge.
Clara tries to console him, the guitarist behind her supports her...
Danny Brady is the one that helps them down off the bridge as the news reporters are there to film it, their whole lives on the screen...
Over tea they talk about his coffee shop and finds out about the scones she bakes-thinking he could make a profit at his shops selling them...he needs to buy her recipe, they are that good!
They start seeing one another and Danny actually hires her brother to work for him. Some things are missing, along with money, a cyber crime upon Danny and her new jewelry from her birthday party.
She starts putting things together and just knows her brother is to blame for it all, or could it be her ex boyfriend who's out of jail now and has been harassing her...
Fear and scary situations but also loving, caring ones also. Love the locale and travel
Especially love his other gift that he gives her, what a true sign of love.
Note and scone recipe from the author are included at the end.
Other works from the author and about the author are highlighted at the end
Excerpt from Maeve is included.

Parenting 101 #7 by Cheri Swalwell
Have read this whole series and I like this one a LOT because it deals with everyday things that effect us all.
Starts with a dedication page and table of contents and a note from Cheri. Like passages from the Bible at the start of every chapter.
Especially love the sharing the author does about raising her family. Letting go and allowing the children to go their own way while still learning lifes lessons.
Love how she points out the hidden meanings from God in our everyday life and treasuring them.
Free ebook from subscribing to author's newsletter.
Each prior book is summarized at the end by telling you what's included in each one.

War Boat (River Sunday Romance Mysteries Book 9) by Thomas Hollyday
Have enjoyed the series but books can be read as a standalone. Really enjoyed this one because of all the action and secrets discovered.
To me it is two books in one: one is the present day where John comes to the area and is taking over for his relative who died.
Two: the past when the area is under attack from the Nazi.
Book goes from present to back in time where you learn how the Nazi attacked the US in such a remote area as River Sunday.
Like hearing of the secret passages under the water and what they find to help them understand how it could really all happen. Very similar to passages in our home town where the rum runners once deposited illegal goods.
Like what they not only find but how the town treats them. Such a huge controverrsy as to who is all involved.
This book was a great read for me because of all the action, romance, shipbuilding trade, secrets, WITCHES, travel, legends and myths Such a good storyteller!

Clean Regency Romance: No Longer Flighty Fanny (Sisters By Marriage Book 3) by Jessica Spencer
Like how she handles things and stays tough. She's married at the age of 15 as others take care of her, taking advantage of her.
The next years she's kept captive and there is danger all around her. She knows what she has to do but she's kidnapped ...
Like all the duties she performs to make the manor a big success-I can not even imagine more than 50 bedrooms in a house!
So many betray her. There are a lot of characters and the story sometimes gets confusing.
Love how she tries to talk her way out of the marriage and telling him how she's lost all her money...
Inventions and new fashions from US  during the time frame-so cool to learn about them.
Other books in the series are summarized and exercerpted at the end.

Soccer Defending: A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Stop the Other Team (Understand Soccer Book 5) by Dylan Joseph
Starts with offer of a free field guide to take with you.
Table of contents where chapters are broken up into specific steps of defending.
Other works by the author are listed along with dedication and preface.
Like that it speaks of how this book, series was written-personal experiences from the author himself.
Love that not only videos will help you play the game and this book fills in the missing parts that are not shown.
Pyramid is discussed and explained about soccer and being a team player.
Points you to other works if you want specific help in a certain position and why you should go deeper into that subject.
Love that there's NOT a lot of backstory included.
Photos included as examplea are being discussed.
Learned a lot of new words and how they are used in soccer. Like strageety techniques als, so precise.
Glossary is listed at the back of the book along with acknowledgments. Poll question is also given where you can make a difference on what the author will write about next.
Go visit the soccer website and there is so much more information there and videos.

I Will Never Marry a Cowboy by Aim Ruivivar
First time author for me and I can't wait to read more of her works.
Story is a bonus for me because the book follows two sister stories. Each have different career choices and different taste in men.
Their father has bought a ranch and they travel back to it to learn about it, discover just what it is he bought and to be one with family.
The neighbors come by to lend a hand and it's a full out feast celebration as the girls drool over the men lifting heavy boxes and getting things into place.
Like the heated discussions and love scenes-it just goes so fast. What I mean is the author has pakced a bunch of things in this book among the pages that would take others 500 pages to tell.
Very descriptive details and love hearing of the food and other cultural things.
Love the outside adventures and the men roughhousing with one another-reminds me of our cousins and brothers horsing around. So realistic.
Liked the new words not commonly used in romance books, comedy that goes along with the storyline and how it all comes together and learning a bit about the adults career choices.
Wish there was a recipe or two included. Had my mouth watering!

Ivan's Choice by Hilary Walker
Have read other works by this author and have fallen in love with her words about horses.
I like how it's part of the NaNo author writing chaellenge every year.
This one starts with Pippa and she's training a horse, Ivan but she learns some distressing news.
A man is there to buy the horse that she's been riding for over 2 years now.
His employer has died and his widow will be selling all their horses-where Bryce works.
She's always using the net to research some thing about horses always trying to better herself. She has low self worth, she's not good enough to be a fiancée, she's not good enough for ...
She has a month to come up with the money and I like how the book is like a diary with dates so you can see the progress she's making over the time frame.
He has definitely shown them all he knows what to do with a horse-things she's not done with Ivan.  She's just not good enough.
She gets very upset when the bank calls and notifies her that yes she can get the loan but in her heart she knows the horse really has a bond and loves Bryce who's been rding her recently.
An emergency arises with the storm ...Love the step by step detailed instructions she's given and shown that will stay with her forever...
She sees Bryce as the enemy as she knows he has trailers for the horses and knowledge and means to raise them.
What I like also about this story is that there are a handful of characters and it's easy to keep track of who is who.
Interactions during the hurricane while they tend to the horses and lack of food and shelter is shattering...
Pippa is not trusting of men, her self, her worth, her whole being but she is able to confide in Bryce and he in her...
Love hearing more about the horses-the author's favorite topic. You should write what you know about.
Can't wait to read more from the author.  About the author is included at the end.  Other works by the author are highlighted at the end.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Under the Same Roof by M.K. Lansbury
A woman is leaving NY to head to Alaska where her aunt died and she's to take over the details of the funeral. She has many contacts along the way that will help her later on...
When she arrives it was nothing like she had expected. Super love the tunnel and riding the rails to get to the town to find out there is only one building there.
Everybody in town lives there and love hearding of the bunkers and playgrounds for the kids and how the community functions.
She is a doctor and that comes in handy when the town is shut away from everything on the outside. Love how she proves herself to them all.
She learns a lot about the town and how her relative ran it as a mayor. Her oppinent is the one she doens't care for but her body says otherwise.
He has his own views of how to run the town and the others voted her in. There are a lot of secrets, hidden places and attitude towards her aunt that others take out on her...
Other works are highlighted and summarized at the end. About the author is included also.
Like this author's style of telling a story and would like to read more of her works.
Best read of the month for all the hidden things I was able to find, treasure them!

Book starts out with offer of printout, table of contents and about the author and his other works along with a dedication and preface.
Have read the other books in this series and find the repition of some importnat instructions to be a great thing as they are incorporated into the new advice.
The parts that struck out to me, as I sit on the sidelines is you can see what part of the foot is in control of the ball and with the right posture you can direct it to where you want it to go.
Also depends on many other things but if you use the right part of your foot and leg the game is in the bag.
Like the techniques discussed and what's being done by the videos at the author's website.
Love the illustrations numbered with an explanation of what is going on with the passing of the ball using your foot parts.
